Alan L. Altman, MD
Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
A native of Queens, New York, Dr. Altman moved to Albuquerque, N.M. as a teenager and grew up wanting to stay in the sunny Southwest. He received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Chemistry at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California before attending medical school at the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego. He completed his internship in General Surgery at the University of California in San Diego, and then completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Altman continued his postgraduate education by completing fellowships in Arthritis Surgery and Total Joint Replacement at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in Downey, California and Total Joint Replacement and Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles. He earned his Board Certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987, and recertified in 1996 and in 2006.
Dr. Altman has held hospital appointments and hospital positions in Los Angeles, Downey and San Diego, California as well as St. Louis, Missouri. Presently, he is affiliated with six hospitals in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Dr. Altman currently is the team physician for the Albuquerque Asylum (Men and Women’s) Semi-Professional Soccer Teams. He has previously served as the team physician for the New Mexico Chiles Professional team and the Albuquerque Geckos Semi-Professional team as well as New Mexico Storm Indoor soccer team. Dr. Altman has participated as a team physician for local high school football and wrestling teams. He is a member of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association/Albuquerque Public Schools Sports Medicine Committee, and is a past chair of the Presbyterian Hospital Section of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Altman is currently the Chief of the Department of Surgery and the Chief of the Orthopaedic Section at Lovelace Medical Center and serves on the Physician’s Leadership Council. Dr. Altman is also a member of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association, New Mexico Medical Association, NMOA and AAOS. Albuquerque Magazine voted him one of the “Top Docs of Albuquerque” in 2007 and 2008.
Dr. Altman is a proud father of three sons and was a soccer coach for local clubs for 19 years.
